Beans have been used as a symbol of growth and new beginnings throughout history. Victorians popularized wearing bean jewelry as a form of good luck. Their popularity originally started as a European seaside souvenir made with “sea beans” that would wash up on shore. These sea beans travelled thousands of miles from the Caribbean and South America. Their tough outer shell protected them on their journey, allowing them to germinate upon arrival in Europe. Local craftsmen started making jewelry with the sea beans as a symbol of good luck and endurance. Since the sea beans were relatively rare and hard to find, jewelers then started carving beans out of different materials to be worn as talismans. Hence Lucky Bean Jewelry was born!
